About

Professor of modern German history and the Sagrera Family Memorial/BORSF Endowed Professorship in History at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. I specialize in the areas of nationalism, antisemitism, and political culture. My first book, Bismarck’s Shadow: The Cult of Leadership and the Transformation of the German Right, 1898-1945 looked at the ways in which the image of Otto von Bismarck was manipulated and used by various political actors, primarily on the Right, to advance their own agendas. Ultimately, it shows how the Cult of Bismarck helped prepare the ground for the rise and eventual success of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis.

My latest book, Antisemitism Before the Holocaust: Re-Evaluating Antisemitic Exceptionalism in Germany and the United States, 1880-1945, was published by Routledge Press in April 2023. It uses a comparative approach to understand the significance of antisemitism in both countries during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Before that, I wrote a book for a popular audience titled, States of Exclusion: A New Wave of Fascism, is a collection of essays in which I use German history, and particularly the history of the Third Reich, to help us better understand Trump’s America and to warn us about the dangers we face.

I am currently at work on a book that explores the relationship between antisemitism and globalization in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century with a focus on Germany and the United States.

  3. I tried every way to order your book-using Pay Pal and without using Pay Pal directly to my credit card. It gave me such a run around I finally gave up. I don’t know if or what I was doing wrong but I just couldn’t order it.
